Oral Health Screening at Stone Soup Ethnic Music Faire
On August 29, 2009, First 5 San Luis Obispo County in conjunction with First Smiles of San Luis Obispo County, completed dental screenings on 50 children at the annual Health Fair held during the Stone Soup Ethnic Music Faire in Grover Beach. Of the 50 children screened, 20 were ages 1-5, and 30 were ages 6 and over. The majority of children were from South County, although a total of 5 children were from Santa Barbara County.
Of the 20 children, ages 0-5 who were screened, 5 were referred for exams. All referrals were indicated as “non-urgent.” In other words, no child was referred for pain or infection.
The screening was coordinated by the Children’s Oral Health Coordination team and included four volunteer dental hygienists, who made the screening possible. A big thank you goes out to Maureen Titus, First 5 Oral Health Coordination Team member, and hygienists Julie Dodson, Nancy Reed, Meagan Weir and April Atchison, who volunteered their time. First 5 Staff member, Anne Tognazzini, also attended the Health Fair to assist and provide incentives to the children who were screened.
