2016 Hands-on Heroes & Champions of Youth Announced!

(San Luis Obispo, CA) – Congratulations to some special individuals whose outstanding daily contributions make a positive difference in the lives of little ones, prenatal to five, and beyond! First 5 SLO County, Early Learning for All (ELFA), and the Asset Development Network are pleased to announce this year’s winners of the Hands-on Heroes and Champions of Youth Awards, recognizing those whose work tirelessly to ensure our community is a better place to live for all children.

Hands-on Heroes Winners (focused on 0-5 year olds)

Children’s Health Hero: Olga Mireles, Lactation Consultant & Registered Nurse, Dignity Health

Family Support Hero: Marilu Gomez, School Readiness Coordinator, Georgia Brown Elementary

Center-Based Early Care & Education Hero: Kari Applegate, Master Teacher, Cal Poly Preschool Learning Lab

Family Child Care Hero: Carmel Flores, Director, Genesis Family Child Care

Volunteer Heroes: Vicki Cyr & Kathy Tyree, Oceano Library Branch Manager and Community Volunteer

Champion of Youth Winners (focused on all ages):

Champion of Youth (Youth): Katie Scarry, Youth Leader/Advocate with CAPSLO (Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo County)

Champion of Youth (Adult): Jose C. Rangel, Soccer Coach, San Luis Obispo County

Champion of Youth (Adult): Betian Webb, Director of Resident Services, Paso Robles Housing Authority

All winners and nominees will be honored at the 2016 Hands-on Heroes & Champions of Youth Awards Dinner, at Mountainbrook Community Church, San Luis Obispo, Tuesday, April 19th, 2016.
